Knee Arthroscopy
- l would ice as much as possible. The more you ice, the less swelling, the less pain you will have after surgery. Please make sure there is clothing between your skin and the ice/ice machine.
- You can shower in 2 days. Home Health Care Nursing will show you how to cover your incision(s).
- You can resume all your normal medications, including blood thinners the day after surgery
- I would wear loose fitting pants. The leg will be wrapped with an ace bandage.
- Yes, l would take the pain medicine every 4-6 hours for the first 3 or 4 days to prevent breakthrough pain. You can transition to Tylenol as needed after that.
- You will be able to weight bear as tolerated right after surgery. You may want a cane or walker for support until you feel steady on your feet.
- Typically in 2-3 weeks, once the incisions have fully healed
- You will not be able to drive for 2 weeks if it’s the right knee. If surgery is for the left knee you can drive when you stop taking narcotic pain medication.
- There will be 2 small incisions
- Surgery takes approximately 20-40 minutes


Knee and Hip Replacement
- 1-3 days. Outpatient surgeries will leave the same day.
- There will be an expected moderate amount of swelling, redness and warmth at the incision site. You may also have drainage that is clear/blood-tinged. You should report any changes that are extreme or sudden. Warmth and swelling can last approximately 6 months after surgery.
- The implants used are a combination of cobalt chrome alloys, titanium, and polyethylene.
- You will need a walker and a cane for all surgeries. Prescriptions will be provided.
- You will be ambulating the same day of surgery with physical therapy using a walker. The walker is provided by the hospital while you are there. You can put all of your weight on the operative side (unless other limitations ordered by the Doctor).
- Arrangement will be made while you are in the hospital. The case manager will help you determine which facilities accept your insurance. Our team will also discuss this with you at the pre-operative appointment
- 2 weeks and then a small pillow can be used
- 6 weeks following surgery
- For 2 weeks after surgery. Please remove at night while sleeping
- 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year
- Some visits will require an X-ray depending on type of surgery
- Approximately 2 weeks after surgery. Physical therapy will help make that determination.
- 6 weeks following surgery
- 6-12 weeks following surgery
- This will be given to you at your post-op appointment
- CPM machines are not recommended at this time.
- Cryo units are available for rent or for purchase. Ask the office for details.
- Vaccine cannot be administered the 3 weeks prior to surgery and 3 weeks after surgery.
- Take antibiotics prior to any dental or cardiac procedure for 1 year after surgery. They can be prescribed by our office or the treating physician.
- 14 days after surgery by home health nurse or in the office at the post-operative visit. Steri-strips will be applied. They will fall off in approximately 1 week.
- Day after surgery. Do not cover the Derma bond glue. Pat dry with towel after shower
- Golf, Bowling, Softball, Dancing 6-12 weeks
- Tennis/Pickleball 12 weeks
- Swimming/Water aerobics- approximately 6 weeks, when the wound is healed
- Gardening 12 weeks
- After left-sided surgery- 2 weeks (automatic only).
- After right -sided surgery- 6 weeks
Shoulder Arthroscopy
- I would ice as much as possible, The more you ice, the less swelling, the less pain you will have after surgery. Please make sure there is clothing between your skin and the ice/ice machine.
- You can shower in 2 days. There is a waterprnof dressing that is placed over the incision that will be covered by gauze. Home Health Care Nursing will show you how to cover your incision(s).
- You can resume all your normal medications, including blood thinners the day after surgery
- l would wear a loose button-down shirt or one size larger cotton I-shirt.
- Stop all over-the-counter medications (fish oil, aspirin, vitamin E., etc.) one week before surgery. Stop prescription blood thinners (Warfarin, Eliquis, etc.) 3.5 days before surgery, as recommended by the prescribing physician.
- Physical therapy in the home will begin the day after surgery.
- Yes, I would take the pain medicine every 4-6 hours for the first 3 or 4 days to prevent breakthrough pain. You can transition to Tylenol as needed after that.
- You will not be able to swim for at least 3-4 months. There is not enough strength in the arm to assist you if you were to slip or fall. You will be able to pool walk 6 weeks after surgery.
- You will not be able to drive for 5 weeks. It is illegal to drive with the sling in place.
- You will be wearing the sling with a pillow for 5 weeks around the clock, including sleeping. You can remove the sling for physical therapy and hygiene.
- There will be 3 small incisions and one 1 to 1 1⁄2 inch incision for the rotator cuff repair.
- Surgery takes approximately l 1⁄2 to 2 hours
